Packing Perfection for your Pet
When you go on vacation you probably make a checklist of everything you need to pack. If you are one of the 65% of pet owners who would like to travel with their pet, here is a packing checklist for animals:
-
Carrier or crate. Make sure it is sturdy, well ventilated and large enough for the animal to stand up and turn around.
-
Nylon or leather collar or harness, license tag, ID tags, and leash. All should be sturdy and fit properly.
-
Food and water dishes, a can opener and spoon (for canned food).
-
Food and healthy snacks. Bring a little more than you think you will need in case you get delayed.
-
Bottled water from home. Like people, many animals are finicky about their drinking water.
-
Medications, if necessary.
-
Health certificate and other required documents. If you are planning to visit a national or state park, or cross the border, you will need to call ahead to find out exactly what is required.
-
A blanket or other bedding. If your pet is accustomed to sleeping on the furniture, bring a blanket or sheet to place on top of the hotel’s bedding.
-
Litter supplies, scooper and plastic bags for disposal.
-
Favorite toys.
-
Carpet deodorizer.
-
Chewing preventive.
-
Grooming supplies. These include a brush/comb; nail clippers, shampoo, towels, and cotton balls/swabs.
-
First aid kit. Include gauze, bandages and adhesive tape, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, muzzle, scissors and tweezers.
-
A recent photograph and written description of each pet. This will be invaluable if your pet is separated from you. The description should include the animal’s name, breed, gender, height, weight, coloring and distinctive markings. The presence of identification tattoos or chips should also be noted.
