June Tips

Pick of the Litter
These dogs make good family pets because they're least likely to bite: Chihuahuas, golden retrievers, Labrador retrievers, poodles, Scottish terriers and Shetland sheepdogs.

Nice Doggies
Don't run away from an angry dog while you're jogging. Stop and face the animal, but don't look directly in its eyes. Say "no" in a firm, but not loud, voice. Back away and don't resume running until the dog is out of sight.

Allergic to Cats?
New evidence shows that people allergic to cats may find relief with a nasal steroid spray typically prescribed to treat hay fever. Allergy suffers who were treated with the steroid (triamcinolone acetonide) and exposed to cats found that their symptoms of congestion, runny noise and itchiness were moderately reduced. That may be good news for people who have limited exposure to cats, but those who have to live with them may need to take more drastic action. This includes not allowing the cat in the bedroom and sponge-bathing the cat weekly to reduce the irritant that is produced whenever a cat licks it's fur to clean itself. Skunk Spray
If your pet gets sprayed by a skunk, instead of using tomato juice, use the following mixture (avoid getting in your eyes and mouth and, of course, your pet's):

  • One quart peroxide

  • 1/4 cup baking soda

  • One teaspoon (liquid) dish detergent

Apply to pet and let it set for 15 minutes. Bath and rinse pet thoroughly.
